Ben Stezaker sees his role as an artist as a form of resistance to the dominant way we now look at photography; as a transparent window for communicating information in our image culture. Stezaker looks for different ways to disrupt that transparent seeing-through of the photograph and finds alternative ways of looking at it. In each series Stezaker finds a point of connection between the indexical aspect of photography and its iconic quality, between a physical imprint or trace and an image. He looks for things that are revealed through concealment. This ambiguity of the image creates a distance that allows the viewer freedom for imaginary projection.
