We all have the tendency to see familiar objects in unrelated things, our brain seeks
pattern in randomness. The painted marks I am photographing are not only graffiti
cover ups, they are amorphous spaces within the urban landscape that allow for the
imagination to create a meaning for them. This is because the marks were painted
unintentionally, or without the purpose of creating art, instead the intention was to
remove it. The cover ups were so outrageously bad that I created a character behind
their creator. I imagined a secret underground artist painting over all of the bad graffiti.
Using the cover of the council to create his own artworks. It was my job to document
them and preserve their beauty. I created a map of Brighton, pin pointing each ‘Cloud’
spot so the viewer could go and visit the photographed spaces and experience the work
for themselves as I did. Turning these non-spaces that you would normally walk past
into extensions of the gallery space. I documented each painting overtime and saw it
change as it was graffitied over and then painted back over again. It was a cycle, as if
there was a conversation going on between graffiti artist and council worker.
