The idea was formed through a realisation that the ‘Opacities’ series that i was working on at the time were actually negatives. Negatives of the image of light as it fractured and refracted through these sheets of glass. The glass acted as a compound lens and where the light was refracted onto the light sensitive paper the dark mark was made. I was interested to see what a true positive of light would look like, where light created an image of light. I tried in many different ways to invert the images within the darkroom. As the books are arranged and rearranged on bookshelves over years, a series of multiple exposures to ambient light create geometric collages of superimposed images of what has been. In a way, these are unintentional ready-made photographs which have been developed (without the human hand) over decades of sunlight exposure. Unlike most photographic processes where light creates darkness on sensitised paper, the light is removing the colour/ pigment and leaving an image of what was once present: light creating an image of light. One piece in the series stands alone. Rather than being an image of a series of other books and objects, it is an image made through the dust cover of the book itself. The dust cover has acted as an intermediary negative and over time an inversion of the cover photograph has been imprinted onto the book cloth in negative. Through conversation on the project with Fraser Carr Miles at Bracken Books, I was introduced to a particular discontinued coloured card stock used for book covers. Fraser had had problems with it fading extremely quickly to short term light exposure. This gave me the idea of producing an image in the same manner and then allowing it to disappear with time. I had taken a series of images of ‘Passages’ and apertures at The Crypt gallery during a residency there. This was because some of the ‘Long Exposure’ shadow imprints I had collected reminded me of doors and windows. I thought it would be interesting to use these as acetate positives to exposure onto this card. I left them outside in the Farm Mews for the two-week duration of the residency. Instead, Talbot chooses to look at the window itself. He tells us that photography is about framing and then shows us nothing but that frame. He suggests that photography offers a window onto the world but chose nothing but that window." (Batchen, 2001: 10) The ‘Opacities’ are photograms of what is often called obscured glass, the kind of glass one finds in private parts of domestic homes.&nbsp; The sheets of glass act as compound lenses, fracturing and refracting the light to specific focal points directly onto light sensitive paper. The resultant images reveal, as one would expect, something of the hidden structure of glass and its peculiarity as neither a liquid nor a solid. But what couldn’t be anticipated was the strange, uncanny space created in this hybrid world of geometric, crystal structure and fluid, organic form. In the process of making the photograms a single millimeter movement of the glass from the photographic paper can dissolve crystal formations into visceral, organic shapes. The series celebrates an intimate and indexical connection between these two most dominant media of transparency in our culture – glass and photography. In this hidden and opaque space are generated ambiguous configurations which are both abstract matrices and photographic images. This ambiguity of the image seems to free the viewer from the ties that these different image expectations make, allowing the viewer a freedom for imaginary projection. The images of glass seem to reveal something of that exact same ambiguity in the photographic image, their simultaneous crystalline fixity and organic fluidity, as one medium of transparency creates In complete darkness within the darkroom, the sheets of glass act as compound lenses, fracturing and refracting light from the enlarger to specific focal points directly onto light sensitive paper. Through developing the ‘Opacities’ series in the black and white darkroom using colourless glass I realised that the images I had created were actually negatives. Having access to a colour darkroom, I began experimenting with coloured/ stained glass to see if I&nbsp;would also get the colour in negative. This was the case for the most part, however, what most interested me was what was unexpected. Deep magenta glass became vivid greens and neon yellow bleeding onto the bare photographic paper. The ambiguity of the image seems to free the viewer from the ties that these different image expectations make, allowing the viewer a freedom for imaginary projection. The images of glass seem to reveal something of that exact same ambiguity in the photographic image, their simultaneous crystalline fixity and organic fluidity, as one medium of transparency creates (2022-24) Over the past 5 years I have been photographing and documenting the ever-changing configurations of over-painted erasures of graffiti made by council workers in Brighton and London. The most recent group of these painted acts of concealment are the ‘Bridge’ series which are photographs taken on a slip-road bridge into London. The title ‘Bridge’ has a double meaning. Firstly, it’s the location of the photographs and secondly, I think of the images themselves as bridges between the worlds of visual experience: painting and photography; the gallery and the street. As the series of photographs developed over several years the focus of attention shifted from the found, unintentional paintings and the various artists to which they inadvertently seemed to allude to, to an interest in the relation with the frame. As the overpainting started to extend onto the frames themselves, the interest of the photographs started to shift to focus on the combination of the abstract painting and the framing devices themselves as in many Howard Hodgkin paintings. At first the interest was in the resemblance with abstract paintings but later the decorative ironwork used to surround these metal panels became of equal interest. It takes as its subject the photo murals used to conceal building works happening behind. The photographic images of a garden wall with trees behind suggested a threshold into a garden. Access to which was through the illusory photographic image. Like the mythic garden of Eden from which humanity has been excluded. It is locked and impenetrable. Entry is only through the image and the imagination. The images reminded me of Chinese and Japanese landscape paintings in which clouds are often central areas of emptiness within the pictorial scene. These spatial gaps served a double purpose in scroll paintings as representing the Buddhist void (behind appearances) and the material substrate, the paper of the painted scrolls left bare; they mediate between the presence and absence of the pictorial illusion. My found ‘Cloudscapes’ seem to operate exactly on that threshold of appearance and disappearance, as the slow degeneration of the blown plaster takes over the painted contours of the clouds. As a result we barely pay attention to the mediation of the image at all. By creating a distance through disruption and an emphasis on the physicality of the printed image, the viewer is encouraged to look at rather than see through the image. The viewer is able to to see the image as an image rather than as a window onto the world. By focusing the eye on the surface materiality of the image, the translucent glass creates a painterly version of the image. Translucency allows for a blurring of the boundaries between the substrate of the image and the reality it represents. Having chosen this particular piece of street furniture with its frosted translucent glass, I chose to introduce a further device to distance the viewer from the image creating a frame within a frame so that the unmediated flowers, vegetation and insect life on the edge allow for a layering of the image between the frame of the photograph and the frame of the frosted glass.
